VW Golf R Cabriolet Concept - this one will be made

Volkswagen has taken a very special Golf along to Worthersee this week – the VW Golf R Cabriolet.

We like the Golf R. It has a lot of class and refinement. No, it doesn’t feel like it’s going to set your hair on fire at any minute like the Focus RS. And it’s not as exciting to look at or drive as its sibling-in-speed, the VW Scirroco R.

But everything the Golf R does is so very grown-up. It can pick up its skirts and whisk you along as well as any hot hatch, but it feels like you’re doing it all in a very controlled and measured way.

Its enormous grip from the 4WD setup makes it feel planted all the time. There’s no fancy B-road balletics going on when you hustle the Golf R, just a placed-perfectly demolition of bends of every kind.

This is a car that Paula Hamilton’s Golf-loving, David Bailey directed character would love. It gives you everything every other hot hatch does, but it does it with aplomb and sophistication.

And now you can have all that grown-up hot hatch goodness in a soft top, as VW has taken the tin snips to the Golf R to give us a the VW Golf Cabriolet Concept at Worthersee. And if you believe this is just a concept then you must think you know an honest MP.

The Golf R Cabriolet gets exactly the same 266bhp/258lb ft turbo four-pot as its tin-top siblings together with the same suspension setup. That makes the Golf R Cabriolet ride 25mm lower than a regular Golf Cabriolet and means a decent set of 19″ alloys and ventilated discs to boot.

Place your order now. This one will be made.
