VW up! UK prices and models announced

We finally – after years of waiting – got the official reveal of the VW up! ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Not quite the radical concept the up! Concept promised to be, the VW up! is more a replacement for the Lupo and designed to mop up sales from buyers who think the Polo is just too big and cumbersome.

And VW will doubtless see some decent sales figures from the up!, especially as the starting point is a bit cheaper than expected – the VW up! arrives from £7,995 for the Take up! (this is going to be worse than the Golf puns) with the 1.0 litre 59bhp lump and five-speed manual ‘box.

The Take up! gets daytime running lights, 14″ steel wheels and painted bumpers. Which tells you it’s about as basic a car as you can get, but with VW build quality it will find a ready market.

If you want a few home comforts in your little city runabout you’ll need to jump in to the Move up!. Then you’ll get remote locking, AirCon, electric windows and split rear seats. Really, the basic needs for most buyers and the starting point – for the VW Move up! – is just £1k more at £8,970 (or £9,330 if you want the 97g/km BlueMotion Move up!).

So that covers the basic entry-level up! and the up! with the home comforts that make life a bit more pleasant. But what if you’re buying the up! because you want a little city car and don’t mind shelling out for more toys? Vw has that covered with the High up! (you couldn’;t make the names up).

The VW High up! gets a meatier version of the 1.0 litre 3-pot with 74bhp and more toys. Those toys include heated seats, 15″ alloys, leather for the steering wheel, gear lever and handbrake, heated electric mirrors, Fogs and the Maps & More infotainment. You also get a splash of colour on the dashboard.

And if even the High up! doesn’t quite fill your comfort needs, there’s always the special edition up! Black and up! White with even more toys and special paint – and all the bits from the High up! – at £11,800. And a big range of option packs – available across the range – offering everything from more chrome to bigger wheels to winter bits and even leather.

The VW up! will be a big seller, and if you jump in now – the order books are open – you should have your new up! for the Spring.
