Vauxhall Adam 1.0-litre Ecotec turbo petrol

Tue, 18 Feb 2014

If there’s one thing the Vauxhall Adam has really been missing since it was launched back in 2012, it’s a modern engine line-up. Now that’s about to change with the imminent introduction of a new 1.0-litre Ecotec turbo petrol unit.

Vauxhall is targeting best in class refinement for its new turbo petrol

The new engine follows the recent trend for high efficiency three-cylinder designs, and will come in 90hp and 115hp variants with emissions as low as 99g/km CO2. The 1.0-litre Ecotec Adam debuts at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show in March.

In addition to producing such a healthy amount of power for a little fellow, the new Ecotec engine benefits from 122lb ft of torque at just 1,800rpm – 30% more at this engine speed than Vauxhall’s old non-turbo 1.6-litre petrol engine. This promises keen responses as soon as you start to get going.

99g/km CO2 from the 90hp version will also mean zero road tax under current regulations, while Vauxhall also says under official EU testing conditions this variant returns 62mpg.

Efficiency is boosted by direct fuel injection, variable valve timing, all-aluminium construction and a switchable water pump.

Further gains come from the brand new six-speed manual gearbox partnered with the new engine. This transmission is some 30% lighter than the gearboxes it replaces, while offering "superior shift quality and excellent precision", apparently.

It should make for an excellent match to the 1.0 Ecotec on this basis, as Vauxhall is also targeting best-in-class refinement for the new triple, adding not just a balancer shaft to counter the three-cylinder design’s inherent vibrations but optimised components throughout the engine bay.

There are no exact on-sale or pricing details just yet, but Vauxhall says the new Adam 1.0-litre Ecotec turbo will be available this spring.

We’ll bring you full details from the Geneva Motor Show on 7 March 2014 – and look out for another Adam-related announcement this Wednesday…
