Volvo S60 Polestar revealed

Sat, 16 Jun 2012

The Volvo S60 Polestar has been revealed as a 508bhp version of the S60 T6 with widened track and huge turbo.

We knew there was a Volvo S60 Polestar on the way, because Volvo teased us with it. What we didn’t know, and still don’t for sure, is whether the S60 Polestar is a one-off like the C30 Polestar or whether it will become a production model.

But as a concept S60 Polestar this is quite a Volvo.

We thought the S60 Polestar might get the V8 from the XC90, but instead it gets the regular T6 engine with a Garret 3171  turbo the size of a small water butt bolted on. That ups the appealing 300bhp or so of the T6 to an M3 annihilating 508bhp.

It’s taken a new cylinder head with larger inlet and exhaust valves as well as the Garret turbo to yield the extra 200 or so bhp for the S60 Polestar, but that’s enough to see it sprint to 62mph in a stunning 3.9 seconds.

The S60 has been lowered by 30mm and gets a track wider at the front by 20mm and at the back by 40mm to keep it planted, together with Ohlins shockers and bigger Brembos . Power goes through a six-speed manual ‘box.

The widened track and lower ride height gives the S60 a much more aggressive stance which is accentuated by the body kit which includes flared wheel arches, new bumpers with splitter at the front and diffuser at the back, side skirts and a boot spoiler. Inside the S60 Polestar gets Polestar seats with bigger bolsters and lots of Alcantara.

The burning question, though, has to be will Volvo put the S60 Poelstar in to production? That certainly seems to be the way the wind is blowing, but we don’t know how wieldy one thumping great turbo will be for the road.

But maybe all it will need is a nice BiTurbo setup to make the Volvo S60 Polestar ready for production?
