What's the difference between styling and design? [w/Video]
Mon, 14 Oct 20132953 Analytics' managing director Jim Hall explains the subtle but important difference between design and styling in a video from Autoline.tv.
Hall believes design means how well the object functions, looks and feels, while styling is predominantly about giving it presence and increased aesthetic value. It's important then, he argues, not to interchange the two words.
In regards to cars, Hall uses the example of the 2013 Honda Accord, citing it as a well-designed and practical car, as opposed to new Chevrolet Impala, which emphasizes style over functionality.
Although two of his examples – whiskey tumblers and a cutlery set – aren't particularly relevant to car design, it's interesting to see how design and styling differ in other disciplines.
