U.S. set to raise fuel-economy standard
Tue, 19 May 2009Government regulators will get their prize of higher fuel-economy standards, and automakers will get the certainty of a national emissions standard, under new rules to be proposed Tuesday by President Barack Obama. The fleet average fuel economy for automakers will rise to 35.5 mpg in 2016 under the president's proposal--10 mpg more than today's mandate. At the same time, the president's proposed rule will cut carbon emissions, thought to be a key factor in global warming.
Almost 80% of drivers admit illegal acts behind the wheel

Offences range from talking on a mobile phone while driving to having bald tyres on their car. In a survey by Flexed, 79% of drivers questioned said they had broken the law within the last year and a further 5% were not prepared to answer.
Young drivers at risk from poor tyre care

A survey by Tyresafe and insurer Ingenie has found that more than a third of young drivers aged 18-25-years old had never checked their tyres for tread depth and a quarter had not checked the tyres on their car for correct pressure ever. The survey found that better education is needed to tell young drivers of the important of looking after the tyres on their car.
