ZF boss thinks 9 speeds is enough for transmissions

He referred to nine speeds as the "natural limit" because going beyond that number adds weight and complexity that cannot be offset by gains in fuel efficiency. The new two-seater, originally rumored to be called the Mercedes-Benz SLC, indirectly replaces the SLS AMG, becoming the second stand-alone model to be conceived, engineered and produced by Mercedes' AMG performance car offshoot at its headquarters in Affalterbach on the outskirts of Stuttgart, Germany. Mercedes has controversially eschewed any traditional reference to one of its founders, Karl Benz, in the name of its new 500-hp-plus twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8-powered machine.

The defunct-but-returning brand was part of the inspiration for the Nissan IDx concepts seen at the Detroit auto show, but Nissan has been talking about selling cars under the Datsun brand in developing markets like India, Russia and Indonesia since last July. The company released a concept sketch on Wednesday of a small people carrier, set to debut at the Delhi Auto Expo in February.
