Smart For-Us concept unveiled at 2012 Detroit show

Smart made a splash with its world debut at the 2012 Detroit auto show: its For-Us concept car provides a vision of the Smart as an American icon, a pick-up. The diminutive truck - just 3547mm long - is longer than a Fortwo, and is supposed to be based on the running gear of the next-gen Smart Forfour, aka the new Renault Twingo. VW has unveiled the New Compact Coupe at Detroit - a Golf Coupe Hybrid Yes, they’re one and the same, the VW New Compact Coupe and the VW Golf Coupe. The first is the teaser name, but the second is the reality. This is a Coupe version of the VW Golf and will come complete with a proper hybrid system and will sit above the Scirocco in the Volkswagen range.

Longest ever period of UK new car sales growth

The SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) has released the new car registration data for May 2014, and revealed that the UK new car market is officially experiencing its longest period of growth since records began. Sales in May were up 7.7% compared to 2013 – making it the 27th consecutive month that figures have increased. A grand total of 194,032 new cars registered also represents the most units sold in May since 2004.
