Bankruptcy looms for cash-starved Saab
Tue, 11 Oct 2011The future is growing dim for Saab. Reports from Europe say the Swedish courts might soon declare Saab bankrupt--possibly as soon as Wednesday--because the company is out of cash. Saab recently won court protection from its creditors while it waited for funds.
Alfa Romeo is not for sale, Fiat chairman says
Tue, 11 Jan 2011Fiat will not sell its Alfa Romeo unit and plans to relaunch the brand in the United States in late 2012, top Fiat executives said. “We would not sell Alfa even if we were offered tons of money,” Fiat chairman John Elkann told reporters at the Detroit auto show on Monday. Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said: “Alfa is part of Fiat's operational perimeter and we've already invested too much to get rid of it.” Volkswagen AG is rumored to be pursuing Alfa Romeo.
Saab gets latest lifeline via $5 million infusion from Chinese company
Tue, 13 Dec 2011Saab has been on the edge of collapse since a cash shortage early this year forced it to halt production. Now Automotive News reports that a last-minute payment from China's Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile has given the Swedish carmaker yet another shot. Youngman wants to get a stake in Saab and has taken the first step by giving the company $5 million to cover tax expenses, with another $26.43 million forthcoming for unpaid salaries and $13.18 million more before the end of December.
