Featuring adaptive four wheel drive and an electronic limited slip diff., the handling is also aided by a 10mm lower suspension setup than the standard Insignia, and HiPerStrut front suspension which keeps torque steer in check. Originally the brainchild of Ferdinand Piech, the VW L1 was the 2002 vision for a green car that supped just one litre of fuel per 100 kilometres. Now the idea is back for 2011, and it's called the XL1.

Now open for registration to design students based in China, the competition aims to further improve the quality of designs emerging from what will soon be the largest automotive market in the world. Students are asked to work to briefs set by three automotive manufacturers - GM PATAC, PSA-Peugeot/Citroen and Volkswagen - with the entries judged by a panel of design directors from both international and domestic OEMs.
