All of which explains why Rolls Royce are delivering a new limited edition Ghost for China at the Shanghai Motor Show this weekend – the Rolls Royce Ghost Alpine Trial Centenary Collection – which takes inspiration for its titivation from the Silver Ghosts that took part in the Austrian Alpine Trials in 1913. The Alpine Trial event in 1913 – just before the world changed forever – saw four Rolls Royce Silver ghosts drive for 1820 miles through almost impossible mountain terrain and establish Rolls Royce as the makers of the ‘Best car in the world’.

GM bets on new four-cylinder family in Europe; U.S. plans unclear

General Motors' European subsidiary, Opel, has revealed a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder direct-injection gasoline engine that will be offered from early 2013 across its lineup, starting with the soon-to-be-revealed Astra-based Cascada convertible. The aluminum block unit, the first in a new range of so-called SIDI (spark ignition direct injection) ECOTEC engines, forms the centerpiece of the company's downsizing strategy for displacement. The engine is claimed to have improved torque characteristics and a significant reduction in consumption compared with its predecessor.

We reported the GLA Edition 1 would kick off sales of the new GLA range last month, but now Mercedes has sorted out the specs, even if we don’t have a UK price yet (although the ‘Edition 1′ can be had on all the non AMG versions in Germany for an extra €6300). Based on the GLA Urban Line, the Edition 1 comes with faux chrome roof rails and skid guards, bi-xenons, 19″ AMG alloys, black louvres with chrome inserts on the grill, black mirrors and waistline trim and privacy glass and will come with a choice of cirrus white, orient brown metallic, mountain grey metallic and designo magno mountain grey paintwork with ‘Edition 1′ lettering on the wings.
