The past weekend, the Harewood Speed Hillclimb in Yorkshire, England, celebrated its Golden Jubilee. For 50 years, vehicles have been making the run up a narrow, twisting paved lane on a stretch of rolling farmland near Leeds, trying to beat the clock. Product design consultancy Priority Design's ‘Donkey Kong Derby Car' was the winner of the IDSA Launch Day 2013 competition, earning its team a brand-new 3D printer. The Launch Day competition, which took place at the Industrial Design Society of America conference on 24 August, asked for designs for a tiny 3D-printed car that could be launched down a miniature model of a ski jump before smashing into a crash site. Featuring Mario and Princess from the classic Nintendo series in glorious 32-bit form, the Donkey Kong Derby Car – car being a very loose term, as it has no wheels – was, in fact, a barrel.

Eagle builds a new E-type speedster

The speedster, commissioned by enthusiast Dr Rick Velaj, uses a standard 1966 E-type as its base. Eagle then rebuilt it to a new sky-high specification, clad it in a one-off aluminium bodyshell, fitted it with its Supersport options (stiffer suspension, uprated brakes and modern tyres) and strapped in its own highly developed 4.7-litre straight six.
