Up for auction is a great condition, 100% functional clock for the W123-body Mercedes-Benz cars.  The W123 models include the 1977-1985 model year diesel-powered 240D and 300D sedans, 300CD coupe, and 300TD wagon, the gasoline-powered 280E sedan and 280CE coupe of those years, and various equivalent European-market model numbers.  This should work for any of those models.  It has been tested and it works properly and keeps good time.  This one is in great shape, as can be seen in the picture below. This came from a well cared-for, apparently garage-kept (but sadly, totaled in an accident) W123 car.

Some W123 models came with this clock, while others (especially the turbo diesels sold in the U.S.) came with a combination tachometer/clock.  This will work for any model that originally came with a clock, and if your car came with a tach/clock that no longer works and you aren't interested in repairing or replacing the tach, you could also easily replace that unit with this one (simply connect the existing clock wire, and leave the tach plug unconnected).  While these clocks are amazingly reliable considering their age, these are old cars so it's also not that unusual for the original clock to have stopped working over the years--if yours has stopped, you can replace it with this fully-functional original replacement for a small fraction of the cost of a new replacement--assuming you could ever even somehow find a new replacement!  A working clock is something you will need to have to complete a faithful restoration of your vintage W123 Mercedes.  I see lots of eBay sellers asking $60 or more for these clocks on a "Buy it Now" basis, but I'm offering this one for less than half of that.

Shipping will be $9 by fast USPS Priority Mail or USPS First Class Mail to anywhere in the United States.  I will also ship internationally--international bidders please use the shipping calculator to determine the shipping cost to your location.

Thanks for looking, and happy bidding!  Please see the picture below.

Audi shifts to eight-speeds for most models

Wed, 12 May 2010

A formal press conference probably won't happen until this summer, but we hear that Audi dealers have received their 2011 order guides, and it looks as though the company will be going from 0 to about 70 percent of U.S. sales being eight-speed automatic transmissions. Beginning this fall, the eight-speed will replace today's six-speed automatic in the A4 2.0-liter turbo sedan and wagon, the A5 2.0-liter turbo coupe and cabriolet, the Q5 2.0-liter turbo, the Q7 3.0-liter turbo, the Q7 diesel, the Q7 with the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 and the all-new A8 and A8L with the 4.2-liter V8.

Volvo Emissions Equality Campaign – Great move

Thu, 15 Jul 2010

The Volvo V70 - less polluting than a Fiat 500 Whenever we get the opportunity – as regular readers will know – we complain about the current obsession with CO2 emissions on cars and call for car makers and Governments to act on the emissions which actually matter – NOx, hydrocarbons and particulates (and here, and here, and here and…). And it looks like Volvo agrees. Volvo are launching the ‘Emissions Equality Campaign to get car buyers to consider the whole picture when it comes to car emissions and not just look at the figure for CO2, which buyers have been brainwashed in to thinking matters (our view of CO2 – not Volvo’s).

BMW to show production hybrid X6, 7-series at Frankfurt motor show

Thu, 13 Aug 2009

A pair of fire-breathing hybrids from BMW based on the X6 and the 7-series will be revealed in production guise at the Frankfurt motor show in September. The ActiveHybrid X6 arrives in the United States late this year, followed by the ActiveHybrid 7 in the spring of 2010. Both hybrids combine electric motors with powerful twin-turbo V8 engines to boost output, performance and fuel economy, while retaining the looks of the popular conventional versions.
