Autoweek's Vinsetta Garage premieres Jan. 3 on Velocity Network

The garage I'd frequent during my high school years, the one at which I sought insight, entertainment, camaraderie and escape, remains warm in my heart with memories. We have these places, you and I, where the people and things that mattered to us—my 1965 Ford Mustang notchback 289 and my buddy's 1963 Jaguar XKE—came to life. In Detroit, that mystical location was Vinsetta Garage.

As Jaguar confirmed its new F-type sports car at the 2012 New York auto show, it issued some teaser video footage of the new £55,000 roadster landing in showrooms in spring 2013. Jag ambassador and former racer Martin Brundle hitches a lift with the company's chief dynamics engineer Mike Cross for a few hot laps in the F-type prototype around its handling circuit at Gaydon. We can safely ignore the hyperbole poring forth ('It's responsive, it's a great car to drive') but it's a good chance to see the all-aluminium F-type in action.

Direct injection petrol and diesel, hybridisation, downsizing, turbocharging, twin-charging the list of efficiency-boosting, fuel saving features being offered in new cars is becoming so long, buying a new one is like revising for exams. Is there room for another? Apparently so, but since there’s no official name for it yet we’ll call it ‘super-downsizing’ or in other words, using a very small engine in a not so small car.
