Autotronic Controls Corp. (ACC) was founded in 1970 as a research and development company by two engineers from White Sands (New Mexico) Missile Range. The men and their other partners were working on a lean burn fuel system called the Electrasonic Fuel Induction system to help fuel economy of new and older automobiles. As the new fuel system was being perfected, the air/fuel mixture was becoming so lean that it was difficult for conventional breaker points and early electronic ignitions to ignite it. The men of ACC then started investigating a new ignition system by using modern technology called capacitive discharge (CD). The CD design opened another door for the ignition, the capability to spark multiple times. ACC has produced the best performing and most popular performance ignitions for over 20 years. The high energy spark of the CD design combined with multiple sparks resulted in a potent ignition. Not only did the multiple spark discharge (MSD) ignite the lean fuel mixture, it made overall improvements in the engine's performance! Wed, 20 Apr 2011Shanghai and New York aren't even over yet, but that hasn't stopped Infiniti releasing this teaser sketch of the car it plans to show at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this coming August. The JX luxury crossover carries styling cues 'such as dynamic and elegant line treatments' over from other Infiniti production models, whilst also drawing from the Essence concept car, sporting the 'crescent cut' greenhouse treatment. Billed as the antidote to 'ho-hum' luxury crossovers, the seven seat JX is said to offer 'exceptional seating flexibility, easy access to the roomy third row, plus the latest in-vehicle technology - challenging the status quo in its class'.
McLaren MP4-12C GT3 (2011) track testing begins
Fri, 11 Mar 2011McLaren has begun testing its latest track weapon, the MP4-12C GT3 ahead of the 2012 FIA GT3 season. How different is the MP4-12C GT3 from the roadgoing edition? The MP4-12C GT3 is based on the standard machine but modified for FIA GT racing by McLaren GT - a joint venture between McLaren Automotive and CRS Racing, a UK-based team currently competing in FIA GT with Ferrari F430s. Externally you'll notice the race-spec fixed rear wing, undertray diffuser, front splitter, louvres and vents. Underneath there's a new suspension system, ditching the road car's linked suspension for FIA-compliant conventional dampers and anti-roll bars. Akebono is supplying race-specific brake components, and Bosch Motorsport has installed its ABS system. The car sits 100mm wider on its new suspension and has suitably flared bodywork as a result. It's still the McLaren's bespoke 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, tuned for racing.
Aston Martin won’t be proclaiming ‘Powered by AMG’ on its Mercedes-engined cars
Mon, 03 Feb 2014Aston Martin won’t be using ‘Powered by AMG’ badges It was a long time coming, but Aston Martin finally found a way to replace their ageing engines by doing a deal with Mercedes AMG to use their very impressive powerplants. And it seems that, depite AMG’s willingness to provide Aston Martin with modern engines, AML aren’t going to be required to put AMG badges on the bodywork or engines of their very beautiful cars. Speaking to Autocar, Mercedes boss Dieter Zetsche said that Mercedes were very happy to have done a deal with AML and equally as happy to be subtle about the arrangement.
