Crankshaft Position Sensor Information

Description

A crank position sensor is an electronic device used in an internal combustion engine to monitor the position or rotational speed of the crankshaft. This information is used by engine management systems to control ignition system timing and other engine parameters. Before electronic crank sensors were available, the distributor would have to be manually adjusted to a timing mark on the engine. It is also commonly used as the primary source for the measurement of engine speed in revolutions per minute.

Components

Common mounting locations include the main crank pulley, the flywheel, the camshaft or on the crankshaft itself. This sensor is the most important sensor in modern day engines. When it fails, there is a chance the engine will not start, or cut out while running.

Function

The functional objective for the crankshaft position sensor is to determine the position and/or rotational speed (RPM) of the crank. Engine Control Unit's use the information transmitted by the sensor to control parameters such as ignition timing and fuel injection timing. The sensor output can also be related to other sensor data including the cam position to derive the current combustion cycle, this is very important for the starting of a four stroke engine.

Benefits

The crank sensor can be used in combination with a similar camshaft position sensor to monitor the relationship between the pistons and valves in the engine, which is particularly important in engines with variable valve timing. This method is also used to "synchronize" a four stroke engine upon starting, allowing the management system to know when to inject the fuel.

Symptoms of Failure

SES/MIL/Check Engine Light

Hesitation

Bucking

No Spark

Long cranking time

Stalling

Sudden drop in RPM

Surging

Hard Shifting

Loss of gas mileage

Misfiring

Replacement

Raise the vehicle onto jack stands. If your vehicle sits very low to the ground, jack it up onto jack stands. Use the front jack point behind the radiator to raise the vehicle up. Place jack stands underneath the front pinch welds and lower the vehicle onto the stands. Disconnect the battery cables from the battery. The crankshaft position sensor will be located on the outside side of the engine block at the end of the crankshaft. Locate the crankshaft position sensor and unplug the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector. Unfasten any bolts or screws mounting the crankshaft position sensor to the engine block. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from the engine block. Installation is reverse of removal.

Infiniti push on with Q50 Eau Rouge project with Sebastian Vettel (video)

Mon, 07 Apr 2014

Sebastian Vettel takes the Infini Q50 Eau Rouge round Millbrook The Infini Q50 Eau Rouge Concept made an appearance at the Detroit Auto Show in January as a possible Performance halo from Infiniti and featuring an appealing 552 bhp. And it looks like it could be heading for production. With Infiniti keen to cash-in on its sponsorship of Red Bull – and the appointment of Sebastian Vettel as Performance Director – the Q50 Eau Rouge could be a good way to create a halo performance model for Infiniti.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420 launches

Tue, 06 Jul 2010

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420 hits the roads next month The only surprise about the new Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420 is that Aston Martin has chosen to reveal it today rather than this last weekend at Goodwood. But at least  it gives us some supercar news even though Goodwood is over for another year. If you remember the last stripped down, lightened and ‘Superleggera-fied’ Aston Martin Vantage – the V8 Vantage N400 – you’re not going to be struggling too much to work out what’s on offer with the Aston Martin V8 Vantage N420.

‘Why We Drive’ documentary looking for sponsors

Tue, 22 Apr 2014

Everyone who has a Netflix account, or uses a friend’s Netflix password, knows the documentary section is where all the action is. The only thing we’d ask for is a few more driving docs. And we hope that “Why We Drive” will enter the fray eventually, but SBR Productions needs a little help from enthusiasts.
