The poll also named Norfolk-based Lotus as the most popular British manufacturer, with seven of its models making the 100 best British cars list. Following the Mini at the top of the list was the McLaren F1, with the Jaguar E-type third and the Range Rover fourth.

No more ‘approximately’ this and ‘sub’ that: here’s the complete list of top trumps. • 0-62mph (100km/h): 2.8sec – the same as a Nissan GT-R, 0.1sec faster than a Lamborghini Aventador, and 0.4sec faster than the original McLaren F1.• 0-124mph (200km/h): 6.8sec – faster than CAR’s long-term Subaru BRZ coupe hits 62mph.• 0-186mph (300km/h): 15.6sec – 5.5sec faster than a McLaren F1.
