GM bets on new four-cylinder family in Europe; U.S. plans unclear

General Motors' European subsidiary, Opel, has revealed a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder direct-injection gasoline engine that will be offered from early 2013 across its lineup, starting with the soon-to-be-revealed Astra-based Cascada convertible. The aluminum block unit, the first in a new range of so-called SIDI (spark ignition direct injection) ECOTEC engines, forms the centerpiece of the company's downsizing strategy for displacement. The engine is claimed to have improved torque characteristics and a significant reduction in consumption compared with its predecessor.

Citroen C4 Picasso five-seat

This is the new five-seat version of the C4 Picasso following the seven-seat model shown at the Paris Motor Show, which will now to be known as the Grand C4 Picasso. Naturally enough then, the two cars will compete with the standard and Grand Renault Scenics, the new Citroen C4 Picasso also tackling the handsome Volkswagen Golf Plus. Hyundai and Rhys Millen extend deal for 2012

Hyundai Motor America and Rhys Millen will continue their partnership into the 2012 Global RallyCross season that starts on May 26 in Charlotte, N.C. He'll return to drive the hopped-up Veloster hatchback in all seven races, including two at ESPN's Summer X Games. “I'm thrilled to represent Hyundai and the Veloster in the GRC series for a second season,” Millen said.
