Dassault Systèmes, in collaboration with Riversimple and the 40 Fires foundation, launched their eCar Design Contest recently, designed to encourage cooperation and the development of ideas on an open source platform. The companies had been in talks for some time regarding a joint project and this competition – a completely holistic, closed-loop approach to the building, sale and use of a car – is the result of their successful collaboration. Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. President James Lentz plans to stick to his guns and tell skeptical lawmakers Tuesday that the company's unwanted acceleration problems do not stem from electronic defects, a copy of his testimony shows. Lentz's reiteration of Toyota's longstanding position suggests that top company executives were unmoved by sharp criticism of that stance Monday by House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman.

On the Avenue de Versailles, in an understated (and perhaps – whisper it – sterile bland) showroom and slap-bang next to a BMW dealer, executive vice president of Nissan Carlos Tavares outlined Infiniti’s ambitious expansion plans and confirmed new models for Europe. The range starts with the G37, which comes as a 3-series rival in saloon and coupe form, and our first drive of the latter confirmed it as a credible BMW rival.
