FOR BOATS:

The International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea (the COL-REGS) call for every boat to be able to produce a sound signal.

Smaller boats (upto 40ft in length) need only have a mouth horn of whistle – but many carry an aerosol pressure canister handheld hooter.

Horns are better than whistles because the lower frequency of a horn carries further than the higher pitch of a whistle and is less affected by wind.

The pressure canister hooters can make a louder sound than simple mouth trumpets but after a while they run out of PUFF.

A NEW TYPE of mouth horn has now been developed which makes as much noise as pressurized ones and never runs out of puff, so long as you are breathing.

This is the SCREAMER, an inexpensive LOUD MOUTH marketed by DULMISON MARINE PTY LTD. A gentle blow creates 120 decibels of sound, which can be heard over a mile away.

Mariners can use it to send the prescribed signals at night or in a fog. In an emergency when your battery has gone flat you can also send Morse Code. All these signals are included on the package, which comes with the SCREAMER.

Mazda RX-8 facelift (2008): first official pictures

Sun, 13 Jan 2008

By Ben Pulman First Official Pictures 13 January 2008 10:47 Mazda’s facelifted RX-8 arrived at the Detroit Motor Show, and it’s more of a mild nip and tuck than a drastic overhaul. Mazda hasn’t suddenly dropped in a V6 or anything like that – so far over 165,000 rotary-engined RX-8s have been sold and Mazda doesn’t want to mess with a recipe that works. That means it’s still a four-door, four seater with 'Freestyle' (suicide to you and me) doors, and a unchanged 1.3-litre turbine engine available in 189bhp and 228bhp states of tune.

New Volvo Concept at Geneva Motor Show. But what is it?

Wed, 12 Feb 2014

The Volvo XC Coupe Concept (left) and Coupe Concept will be joined by a third concept at Geneva Now Volvo has its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), and its new Drive-E engine range, heading for production they’ve been planning three new concepts to show off the possibilities the new architecture and engines promise. The first of those was the very appealing Volvo Concept Coupe which debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year as a 21st century take on the classic Volvo P1800. With stunning looks, a new nose evolved from the earlier Concept You, floating grill and slim headlights, the Concept Coupe also came with a 4WD drivetrain powered by a 2.0 litre petrol and an electric motor for an output of 395bhp.
