1950 Buick Special 248 c.i.d. Straight 8 and Running Gear. (The Invisible Car)
A person wanted the complete body and title of this car along with the radiator to use for a Monster Truck Project. My last straight 8 was in 1963 so I was interested in saving this running gear from the bone yard. I am a retired professional mechanic and wanted to get inside of this wonderful American engine noted for smooth, linear, quiet torque. After the engine rebuild I found it easy to drop the engine back into the chassis to hear it run. I jury rigged a foot throttle and junk radiator onto the project so I might run it through multiple thermo cycles and be able to check it out real well. It runs so smooth and new and the brakes worked, so I slapped on some tire takeoffs and cobbled two junk seats onto the frame. In the last 18 months of ownership we have had it in one parade and have driven it approximately 30 miles on these country roads. The Dynaflow and rear end were checked for fluid levels only. They both work fine. Manual steering and suspension is lubed and seems ok. Since the frame has only surface rust, I was careful to keep it unmolested. It received no cutting or welding. The lever shocks work, but the replaceable ends are bad. One wheel cylinder leaks and it needs the torque ball seals and boot. (see picture with bungee cord and rag to keep dirt out) Also to be included is the rebuild-able stock double fuel pump with vacuum, one under hood air duct, assorted small parts and 5 original wheels with good spring clips.

That car for me was a real benchmark. It set the Jaguar identity arguably until the present day.

Subaru’s rear-drive sports car (2011) at 2011 Geneva motor show

Tue, 22 Feb 2011

While Toyota unveiled a revised version of its FT-86 sports car at the 2011 Geneva motor show, Subaru chose to only preview the powertrain of its 'Toyobaru' rear-drive sports coupe. Subaru and Toyota are developing the car together, and each will produce a version of the rear-drive coupe in 2012, but so far it’s been Toyota that’s grabbed all the limelight. Yes, though Subaru was originally due to show a full concept version of its RWD sports car at Geneva, but has instead only revelead the powertrain and basic body shape – not the best move, as the Toyota looks good, and without body panels you only imagine this Scooby version to have bland, flat body panels. The engine is a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre flat four, and the car rides on 17in wheels.
