Next-gen Passat to offer hybrid and twin-turbo power

VOLKSWAGEN is going even more upmarket with the all-new version of the Passat, which is due to hit showrooms later this year. Soon buyers will be able to include a plug-in hybrid and an all-new 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel among their forecourt options, as VW goes chasing after its sister company Audi. Weight-saving measures have chopped up to 85kg from the new kid on a like-for-like basis, which helps achieve VW's stated efficiency boosts of 20% versus equivalent outgoing Passats.

2012 Honda Crosstour lineup gets a four-cylinder

Honda has added a four-cylinder engine to its Crosstour wagon for 2012. The Crosstour will now be available with a 2.4-liter engine in addition to the V6 with which it debuted. Fuel economy goes up with the new engine to 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

But unlike the VW Group, which manages to offer very similar cars from VW, SEAT and Skoda and create a different customer base, GM seems to have failed to make the marketplace work with Opel and Vauxhall competing with Chevrolet.
