This is an authentic Garmin product, not a knock-off or pirate copy like some others on ebay.  I bought it brand new a couple of months ago and used it on a road trip to Oman and the UAE.  It worked great.  It listed hotels and restaurants and places of interest, and it had detailed maps just like it does in the USA.

Why should you care that this is a genuine Garmin map?  Because Garmin is getting better at fighting the pirates.  The GPS units they made in the last years will not load the copied knock-off maps.  I learned this the hard way - I bought a lower priced map here on ebay and, shame on me, I did not read the fine print - that long list that says: it will work on these units, but not on those units - and I had one of those, a newer Nuvi that rejected the pirated maps.

Also note that this is a current map set.  The same one Garmin is currently selling.  That is important because these maps can not be updated, so if you buy a 5 year old map on ebay you are stuck with a 5 year old map.

These maps come on a micro disk.

If you have used a Garmin micro data card before you can stop reading now.  If you have never used a data card in your GPS, let me explain how it works, because the first time I used one, I was skeptical.

All you have to do is take the micro data card out of its case and push it into the data card slot in your Garmin.  That’s it - you’re done.  When you turn on the unit it will automatically load the maps on the data card - all the maps,  all the roads, all points of interest.  You don’t need any unlock code or anything else, and that’s why I can sell this to you and you can sell it to someone else - it’s plug and play - there’s nothing to it. While you are in the USA the card will have no effect on how your unit operates.  When you get to the Middle East the unit will pick up the satellites and start using the maps from the data card.  You don’t have to do anything.

This is the full version of the maps, it is not an update.  You do not need to have any Middle East maps preloaded on your GPS.  My unit only had the North America maps installed before I plugged in this card.  I bought this and just popped it in.

Note that when you open the package you will see what looks like a full size SD data card.  That SD card is just the housing for the micro card.  You take the micro card out of the housing and insert it into the GPS.  The card slot for the micro card on the gps is very small - it almost looks like a decoration rather than a card slot, but you push the micro card in and the unit reads it.

Just a few years ago a card like this would have cost around $300.  It use to seem silly to buy Garmin maps for a place I was only going to for a short while, but at these prices, it’s a no brainer.  If you buy it and use it for a trip, you too can sell it on eBay when you get back and reduce your cost.  Pretty neat

Bigger than the last generation E Class, the new E Class gets a complete styling overhaul, with a new style in keeping with Mercedes more recent ‘Family’ looks.

General Motors to shut down Saab

Fri, 18 Dec 2009

General Motors has announced that it will be closing the Saab brand after the company was unable to strike a deal with Spyker Cars. This follows from last month's withdrawal of would-be suitor Koenigsegg, leaving Spyker the sole contender in the acquisition of the ailing Swedish brand. According to Nick Reilly, GM's European president, the company has decided to cut its losses: "Despite the best efforts of all involved, it has become very clear that the due diligence required to complete this complex transaction could not be executed in a reasonable time.
