The biggest car market in the world is actually the compact saloon, even if Europe, and particularly the UK, has taken to the hatch and compact SUV instead. We recently had the Peugeot 301 arrive as an offering for more budget-minded car buyers in countries like Turkey, Eastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Greece, Middle East and Africa, and the new Citroen C-Elysée is the Citroen take on the same objective.

Mercedes B55 (2011) - a ballistic V8 B-class

Mercedes' tuning arm AMG has not yet ventured into sensible B-class territory, but a bunch of Merc trainees in Germany has come up with this: the B55. It's a V8-powered B-class, complete with AMG-spec 383bhp 5.5-litre V8 mounted up front and driving an old W210 E-class rear axle. Sounds like a promising skunkworks special, derived from an old B200 CDI hack that was kicking about the training centre.

Kia has released a short film featuring Peter Schreyer that provides an insight into the world of premium car design in which he explains the importance of proportion. In the presentation, Schreyer sketches the company's new K9 sedan, describing how a rear-wheel drive platform affects the car's design, with its generous wheelbase, short front overhang and the 'prestige distance' between the center of the front wheel and the A-pillar.
